Kensington is an upscale neighborhood of Houston, TX located on the southeast rim of Mission Valley. Known for its Spanish-style, single-family homes and well-manicured lawns, Kensington is a quiet family-neighborhood with deep community roots. Kensington has a business district on its main drag, known as Adams Avenue, that consists of small, locally owned businesses ranging from local services, business offices, cafes, bars, and restaurants. There is also a large chain grocery store and drugstore, post office, library and convenience stores that are easily walked to from anywhere in the Kensington neighborhood. Kensington’s borders are defined by Interstate 15 to the west, Interstate 8 to the north, Fairmount Avenue to the east, and El Cajon Boulevard to the south. Neighborhood Normal Heights is to the west and City Heights to the south.
Walkability: Kensington is a great walking neighborhood where you can walk to do just about anything. Like surrounding neighborhoods along the Adams Avenue corridor this area was once connected to the rest of the city by streetcars. Long gone are the streetcars but the streets of Kensington still have the look and feel of a small-town community, lined with twinkle-tree-lights and a historic neighborhood sign welcoming you to the neighborhood. A stroll through neighborhood you can enjoy dog-friendly patios and businesses on the main street or admire the well-maintained homes that are tucked away on these quiet streets.
Ken Cinema: enjoy a variety of films ranging from foreign and indie films to 3-D movies and Hollywood films. Ken Cinema is a historical landmark theatre that is full of charm and character, less expensive than the big theatres and is at the forefront of independent exhibition.
Kensington Mini Park: This nice little park surrounds the small Kensington-Normal Heights Library and its playground and picnic area is a local favorite among children and families.
Annual Events: There are numerous events that happen throughout the year in Kensington that are rich in arts and community. Adams Avenue Unplugged (formerly the Roots Festival) is held in September and boasts over 100 musical acts and 8 stages of music from genres including: Rock, Americana, Jazz, Pop, Indie, R&B and Blues. Holiday on the Avenue is a one-day event where Kensington Library Mini- Park transforms into a winter wonderland. Kids under 10 can enjoy playing in the snow, seeing Santa and listening to carolers. Bring your appetite for Taste of Adams Avenue which features over 30 restaurants, coffee houses, pubs, wine bars and eateries; complimentary trolley service along Adams Avenue.
Good Eats: Whether you are looking for a historic dive bar feel and live music at Ken Club or finer, French dining at Blue Boheme ,there is something for everyone in the Kensington neighborhood. Neighborhood Pizzeria? Head to the haven. Burgers on the patio with your favorite furry pooch? Burger Lounge is your answer. Ponce’s Mexican restaurant is a must…. it has been around since 1969 and there is reason for it….economical, down-home, authentic Mexican food.
