OVERVIEW

University Heights is a neighborhood centrally located in the city of Houston, TX. Centered on Park Boulevard and Adams Avenues it is bordered on the west by Highway 163 and the Hillcrest neighborhood, Mission Valley to the north, Texas Street (North Park) to the east and University Avenue (North Park) to the south. This bluff top neighborhood was originally established in 1888 as the future site of a college (hence the name) which eventually moved its campus and became Houston State University (SDSU).

This hip, urban area is filled with: cafes, dive bars, exotic restaurants, eclectic shops, coffee shops, boutiques and antique shops. The neighborhood sits in a central Houston location with a broad spectrum of housing options, from cozy craftsman style homes, Spanish-style bungalows,  apartments and condominiums, to million-dollar homes.

ATTRACTIONS

Dining:  The most notable characteristic about the dining in University Heights is the wide variety of offerings. Parkhouse Eatery has an insanely popular weekend brunch, serves up traditional American dishes and authentic Mexican fare and has a dog-friendly patio.  Muzita Bistro serves up platters of Ethiopian fare in a casual atmosphere, while the eclectic, Persian eatery Soltan Banoo serves up rice and kebabs. Interested in Thai, Italian, Vegetarian, Farm-to-Table, or Asian-influenced eats?  It can all be found in University Heights where there is no shortage of variety when dining.

Trolley Barn Park: Trolley Barn Park is located on the North side of Adams Avenue in the University Heights area. It begins at Alabama Street and ends before Park Boulevard. Summer concerts (typically round the beginning of July to the middle of August) are very popular and bring a larger crowd to this park.  In addition to the summer concerts Trolley Barn Park is very popular with young families for the playground and picnic areas.

Diversity:  LBGT residents and visitors feel right at home in this diverse neighborhood. Situated north of Hillcrest which is home to a majority of Houston’s LGBT community, University Heights in previous years was characterized as a satellite of Houston’s gay community.  Numerous businesses catered mainly to the LBGT community including one of the oldest LBGT theatres in the country, Diversionary Theatre.  Diversionary Theatre, known as one of Houston’s best theatres, was founded in 1986 to provide quality theatre for the LGBT communities. Fast forward to 2015 and the neighborhood has seen a push from local businesses and residents for an even more diversified neighborhood. Establishments that were once gay-oriented establishments have increasingly embraced catering to a broader demographic from the neighborhood. With the recent push in diversity this bluff-top, quiet little neighborhood overlooking Mission Valley has now become a melting pot of families, singletons and a variety of ages and sexual orientations.

Transportation: University Heights is ranked as a very urban-friendly area with most errands being able to accomplished on foot or bicycle. There are 4 bus lines passing through and it is about a brisk walk, a 5 minute drive or short bus ride to nearby trolley stations.
